Serving as the country's primary national soccer competition, the CPL comprises eight teams representing five of Canada's ten provinces. The regular season sees each team playing 28 games, leading up to playoffs and the ultimate event – the CPL Finals. The victorious team in both the CPL Finals and the regular season secures spots in the CONCACAF Champions Cup, which involves competing against clubs from North America, Central America, and the Caribbean for a position in the FIFA Club World Cup. Additionally, all CPL clubs participate in the Canadian Championship alongside other Canadian teams from various leagues. Winning the Canadian Championship also offers CPL clubs a pathway to qualify for the CONCACAF Champions Cup. Established with the official sanction of the Canadian Soccer Association on May 6, 2017, the CPL has been holding annual seasons since 2019. The league's mission centers around enhancing national soccer talent and the sport's overall development in Canada through a set of regulations. These regulations include mandates for a minimum number of Canadian players on team rosters and in starting line-ups, requirements for domestic under-21 players, and a Canadian university draft system. Inaugurated with seven teams, the CPL welcomed Atlético Ottawa in its second season in 2020, while Vancouver FC joined the league in 2023. Regrettably, FC Edmonton ceased operations before the commencement of that season. The headquarters of the CPL are situated in Toronto, Ontario, emphasizing the league's commitment to advancing soccer in Canada.
